Matthaus makes bold Liverpool Champions League prediction

Lothar Matthaus has named Liverpool his favourites for the Champions League and reckon we’ll have way too much quality for Bayern Munich in the Last 16…

After our game with Bournemouth this Saturday in the Premier League, we’re up against the Bundesliga champions on February 19th – first leg at Anfield.

It’ll be imperative to get a decent lead on Merseyside, considering our form away from home in Europe this term, as Matthaus suggests himself.

“Liverpool have been my favourites from the start, and I don’t like to change my mind”, Matthaus told FourFourTwo Magazine, cited by Mwike Football.

“After reaching last year’s final, they’re ready to win it. They have the most complete team.”

“They do have more quality than Bayern right now, but Liverpool lost all three group games away- that’ll give Bayern hope.”

On current form and with our injury crisis, we wouldn’t say we’re frontrunners for the Champions League, as our eggs are predominantly in the PL basket!

However, another brilliant European run will boost confidence throughout the club.

The victory over Napoli in December inspired us to go on a fantastic domestic run of wins, so it’s not necessarily the case that we’ll benefit from playing less games if we exit the competition.

What is vital though is picking up three points at the weekend against Bournemouth. It will feel like a massive relief if we can achieve it, having underperformed v Leicester and West Ham most recently.
