Former Reds man concocts unusual method of stopping ‘fantastic’ Sadio Mane

Former Liverpool player Gary Gillespie says there is only one possible way to stop the in-form Sadio Mane: by fouling him!

Mane scored twice against Burnley on Sunday afternoon to take his tally of Premier League goals to 16 – just one less than Mo Salah and the same number of non-penalty goals as Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero.

Gillespie jokingly said on LoveSport Radio: “I would have let someone kick him. He’s been fantastic this season, I think that’s his highest goal tally for Liverpool and he does look a threat.

“They are so versatile up front. [Roberto] Firmino has had a little bit of a quieter season; certainly, Salah has had a quieter season.

“But Mane, he’s come to the fore and really has probably been, out of the three of them, the most consistent and the best.”

Mane has certainly been exceptional this season and is often overlooked by many – he’s just as important as the other two members of the front three.

If the Reds are to win either the Premier League or the Champions League this season, Mane’s good form will need to continue.

Up against Rafinha tomorrow, he could well be crucial if the Reds are to go through to the quarter-finals of Europe’e elite competition.
