Predicted XI v Barcelona: Klopp has tough midfield call to make

Posted by

Nearly all of Liverpool’s team to face Barcelona this Wednesday picks itself.

Alisson will play between the sticks, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson at fullback. Virgil van Dijk will begin alongside Joel Matip at centre-back.

Up top, Roberto Firmino will lead the line, after being passed fit to train with his team-mates today. Naturally, world-class forwards Sadio Mane and Mo Salah will join him at the top of the field – charged with plenty of defensive responsibility though with Barca’s onrushing fullbacks.

In midfield though, Jurgen Klopp has big decisions to make.

The boss to pick three out of Fabinho, Gini Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Naby Keita – with Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain wildcards that will surely only make the bench.

Despite his concussion v Cardiff, Fabinho is a must-start at the base of midfield in the no.6 role. Jordan Henderson, who is in exceptional form as a box-to-box midfielder, will get the nod in one of the roles ahead of him – and will wear the armband to boot.

In terms of the whole season, Wijnaldum has probably been Liverpool’s best midfielder, but in recent weeks, Keita has finally started to show what he can offer both offensively and defensively.

It’s a toss up between those two for the third spot, but we think Klopp will go with Gini – who has more experience in these types of games for us.
