Ian Doyle says two PL goalkeepers fighting to replace Mignolet

Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet is undergoing a medical at Club Brugge today before completing a transfer back to his native Belgium.

He’s been a loyal servant for us and we wish him well, but are now very intrigued as to who our new Alisson backup will be!

Ian Doyle, the Echo’s new Liverpool correspondent after James Pearce’s exit, says that Southampton’s Alex McCarthy is the favourite, but that released West Ham man Adrian is also in the running.

The latter is available on a Bosman after not renewing Upton Park terms, while McCarthy would cost us something after becoming Southampton’s first-choice ahead of Fraser Forster last season.

Both are decent and in fairness, are not going to play any football unless Alisson gets injured or suspended – which didn’t happen once in 2018/19 – so we’re not fussed who arrives.

Doyle has confirmed that Andy Lonergan won’t be given a contract as a third-choice keeper for the campaign, too.
