Liverpool could buy Lacazette with Benteke funds, says Le10 Sport…

Sounds good on paper, doesn’t it?

But for is – this is nonsense.

French publication Le10 Sport have run an exclusive which suggests Arsenal and Liverpool are to make €40m bids for Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette, and we’ll fund our offer with cash generated by the sale of Christian Benteke to Crystal Palace.

Benteke is the subject of a £31.5m bid from the Eagles (according to the Guardian), meaning we’ll recoup all but £1m of what we spent on the Belgian powerhouse last summer.

Le10 Sport reckons we’re happy to spend that kind of money again on 25-year-old Lacazette, but we have serious doubts.

The French international, who was actually ignored by Didier Deschamps for the Euro 2016 squad, plays centrally – but in Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi, Danny Ings and makeshift forward Roberto Firmino – we’re more than covered up top.

We cannot imagine that with other more needy areas of the squad requiring attention, we’ll spend enormous money on another striker who’ll block Origi and Ings from the first-team… Instead, Liverpool still need a central midfielder, and if Mamadou Sakho receives a ban on Thursday, we could do with a centre-back as well.

With no word from a reliable, trusted Liverpool source, we’d take this rumour with a big pinch of salt.
