Southampton, eat your heart out.

According to the Newcastle Chronicle, if the Gini Wijnaldum deal proceeds as expected, we will have paid Newcastle United an eye-watering £67 million for just three players since 2011.

They are:

  • £25m – Georginio Wijnaldum (July 2016)
  • £7m – Jose Enrique (August 2011)
  • £35m – Andy Carroll (January 2011)

Andy Carroll was a club-record sale, and they go on to report than the £25 million we’re expected to pay for Dutch international Wijnaldum would be a record sale for a side in the Championship – far eclipsing the previous record (via Mail).

PSV Eindhoven are also set to benefit from the impending transfer;  a sell-on clause was inserted in Wijnaldum’s contract when he moved to England for £14.5 million last summer. It is unclear what percentage of the fee they will be given.

We have not sold any players to Newcastle since 2011 that could help to balance the books.

Let’s just hope Gini turns out better than the other two!
