It’s easy to overlook just how important Roberto Firmino is to Liverpool when the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane stand out in the manner in which they did against Everton.
He is this team’s illusive force that is so pivotal to the way we play but so often underappreciated for what he offers by those outside of Liverpool.
His movement is incredibly unselfish, his hold up play is outstanding considering the size of the defenders he pins himself to, his touch is exquisite and can produce a moment of magic from out of nowhere.
Everton’s Mason Holgate was the latest unfortunate victim of some Firmino skill as he was drawn to the ball only for the Brazilian to let it run between his legs before leaving the defender for dead.
What made the passage of play even better was Holgate’s subsequent cry of desperation, helplessness, embarrassment. All of the above. Even he appreciated the skill he had just been fooled by.
