Guardiola makes Anfield admission that opposition fans will hate

Pep Guardiola knows a thing or two about winning football matches, but he is yet to taste victory at Anfield.

Last season’s goalless draw was the closest he has come – only a shocking Riyad Mahrez penalty kick stopped it from happening – but the Spaniard has been explaining the fear that opponents get when playing at the famous stadium.

Facing the Reds is never easy, but that’s amplified with the backing of the incredible home support.

Speaking to Catalan outlet ARA with reference to Barcelona’s 4-0 defeat in the Champions League semi-final, Guardiola said: “Anfield believed that a goal would be scored. And I am convinced that the players knew that Anfield is Anfield.

“What it says, ‘This is Anfield’, it’s not marketing. It has something that no other stadium in the world has. They score a goal and in the next five minutes, they seem to have four. You look small, you see opposing players everywhere.”

While most opposing fans claim the Anfield atmosphere is a myth and the power of the stadium is nonsense, results there over the years are sufficient proof to show that isn’t the case.

One of the best managers that the game has ever seen also believes in it, as if it hasn’t been evidenced enough.

Next season will see the Reds and City do battle once again in the Premier League – and perhaps the Champions League knockout stages.

Hopefully, Anfield can be the difference and the Reds can bring home another trophy to add to last season’s European Cup.
