‘Win the league’ – Sami Hyypia shares three-word ambition for Liverpool’s season

Liverpool fans are hoping that this season can be much better than the last one and with a positive start on the pitch, we have no reason but to aim for the very top – something Sami Hyypia is certainly doing.

Speaking with BBC Sport, our former captain said: “The ambition is to win the league.

“As long as we are competing until May to be the champions I think we can say we will have had a successful season.

“The top four is always the minimum target to reach but everyone wants success and some trophies this season.

“It would be foolish to look at what the others are doing. We just concentrate on what we are doing and do what we do best and then we see what the result is.”

The use of ‘we’ from the 50-year-old is brilliant to see, as it’s abundantly clear how close the Reds remain to his heart today and the love from our fans to him is as strong.

The former Finland international has lofty ambitions for Jurgen Klopp’s side and there’s no reason that we can’t maintain a title charge against the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City.

It will be a big challenge but with the ability to rotate in European competition, we may well receive a small edge of having more fringe options ready for impact in the Premier League when called upon but also the bigger players being fresh when needed most too.

There’s such a long way to go in this campaign but confidence should very much be in place that we have the ability, experience and squad depth to do what the former defender is hoping for and watch Virgil van Dijk lift silverware in May.
