According to reports in the Metro, Balotelli has emerged as a surprise target for the Serie A side in the last few days, with former Reds manager Rafael Benitez keen to sign the struggling frontman.

Earlier this week, it was suggested that the transfer fee on offer was around £10m, significantly less that the £16m the Merseyside club paid AC Milan in the summer, but fresh reports have speculated that the offer may well be higher.

The source states that Benitez is keen to partner the former Manchester City man with Gonzalo Higuain, who was linked with a move to Liverpool earlier this year.

Napoli are confident that Liverpool will sell the 24-year-old, who has scored just twice since his arrival at Liverpool, and is yet to find the net in the Premier League, having now gone seven games without a goal.
