While Brendan Rodgers has repeatedly discounted our chances of making a big-money signing in the January transfer window, it has not stopped the press from speculating, as the Daily Star have done here.

According to the source, the European Champions will look to use the cash from the £40m sale of Benzema to Anfield, to fund a bid for Cavani, who has fallen out of favour in Paris after a row with manager Laurent Blanc.

The Uruguayan has also been left frustrated by his role with the French giants – repeatedly being forced to play out wide to accommodate Zlatan Ibrahimovic – and his potential availability has also alerted Arsenal.

Although the report claims that Benzema is frustrated in Spain, there is little evidence to back up the claims, with the centre-forward having struck 14 times this season, generally as a starter.

The Star cites reports in Spain which claim the player is fed up with manager Carlo Ancelotti, and an unsteady relationship with the Madrid fans, who have at times been left frustrated by his performances.

We are of course desperate for extra input up front, with Daniel Sturridge still battling back from injury, and with the likes of Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert struggling to find the net consistently (although the latter pair bagged at the weekend)…

However, this rumour can be looked at as hopeful to say the least, although we’d undeniably be dancing in the streets if we ever did manage to secure the wonderful Frenchman.
