Nigerian striker will sign a contract with Liverpool this week, confirms spokesman

We reported this news back at the start of the month, and according to a spokesman for Nigeria Under-23, Timi Ebikagboro, the transfer of Taiwo Awoniyi will be completed this week.

He told Africanfootball.com, “He will leave this week for England to sign his contract with Liverpool and that is why he is not here training with us for the All Africa Games.”

The teenager turned 18 earlier this month and plays as a striker for Nigeria Under-23s. The report claims we’ve beaten off competition from AS Monaco, Red Bull Salzburg and FC Porto for his services.

This summer, we’ve bought Bobby Adekanye who’s gone straight into the youth set-up, as well as Allan Rodrigues from Brazilian side Internacional – but the probable acquisition of the African forward shows our work to bring in promising talent never ends.

This August Sheyi Ojo and Harry Wilson have left the club on loan, but Awoniyi won’t come in as a youth level replacement because of work permit issues. A previous story by Africanfootball claimed the attacker would immediately head out on loan, likely to Belgium, to help with a future permit.
