Joel Matip looks to be an excellent signing, and the player himself is clearly thrilled to be joining Liverpool. When asked if he had a message to send to the fans, he spoke of how much of an honour it was to move to such a huge club (via Liverpool’s official website).
The former Schalke star could be a big player for us this season, and is hoping for a successful debut campaign.
“It is a pleasure and an honour to be a part of Liverpool and I will do anything for us to be successful,” he said, when asked if he had a message for Liverpool fans.
He’d obviously been with the Bundesliga team for a while, and you naturally develop really strong loyalties to a club. He suggests that when Liverpool came knocking it was an easy decision though, as the reputation of the club obviously precedes it.
“To choose Liverpool was an easy decision, but to leave Schalke was hard,” he continued.
“It wasn’t hard to decide to go to Liverpool or to decide to choose Liverpool – this was simple.
“This is a big and famous club – famous for its supporters and its history. Everyone knows Liverpool.”
It’s going to be incredibly exciting to see the Cameroonian international in action in a Liverpool shirt, and with pre-season already underway we may get to see him very soon.
It does seem likely that we’ll see Matip partnered with either Dejan Lovren or Mamadou Sakho when the season begins, which is definitely a thrilling prospect. Our defence has been a bit of a concern for a while now, but Jurgen Klopp looks dead-set on remedying that issue.
