In truth, we all knew the chase for promising young Leicester City full-back Ben Chilwell ended a week ago — but if you had held on to any lingering hopes that we might still get our man, you can now officially forget them.

That’s because the 19-year-old has just put pen to paper on a new five-year contract with the reigning Premier League champions (via Mail).

“It’s fantastic news for us. Ben is a player with a big future and I am very happy that future will be with Leicester City,” said Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri.

Chilwell did not feature in the Premier League last season, but a series of strong performances in the domestic cups and a successful loan spell with Huddersfield had grabbed our attention.

Klopp gives Sakho update

It’s unclear whether or not we’ll dip back into the market. It would appear that we’re short at full-back, especially after selling Brad Smith and allowing Jon Flanagan to leave on loan – but Klopp says any further deals depend on how his players react to their new roles in the squad (via ESPN).

As our very own Jordan Chamberlain suggested in his column earlier today, using Milner as cover is also an option.
