Simon Mignolet has been gushing with praise for our new centre-back, Joel Matip.
Matip was brought in on a free transfer from Schalke over the summer, but turned in a performance worth of an expensive acquisition on Saturday afternoon. It was all the more remarkable given it was his Premier League debut.
He partnered Dejan Lovren at centre-back, and the two appeared to strike up an almost instant rapport.
“I thought Joel was outstanding,” said Mignolet (via Echo).
“He stayed calm and did his job really well. His physical presence makes a big difference. He won his challenges in the air and he used the ball well.
“Spurs don’t play a lot of long balls but against teams who do he’s going to be very important. He can be a big player for us.”
“Big” is definitely the right choice of words – at 195cm (6ft 5in) he is comfortably the tallest player in our defensive unit and will add some much-needed aerial prowess to the back four.
