Emre Can has told the official site he was Jurgen Klopp’s confidant when the manager decided to bring in new centre-back, Joel Matip.
Our German midfielder, who has rapidly become one of the most important cogs in the side, explained how he knew Klopp would sign the former Schalke player long before it became public knowledge.
“Klopp said to me last year that he always said when he was at Dortmund that when he was at another club he would buy Matip,” revealed Can.
Matip missed the first couple of games of the season after picking up a knock during our pre-season schedule, but he was one of the best players on the park against Spurs last time out.
Can went on the explain that it was important to have players like Matip in the side, calling him “good on the ball” and a “leader”.
“He’s very good on the ball. He was a leader at Schalke and played many years there. I think you need a player like him in the team”
The question in whether or not Matip can retain his place in the starting XI for the visit of Leicester next weekend.
