Pochettino comments on Lallana’s bizarre U23s sending off

Mauricio Pochettino has spoken out in defence of Adam Lallana following his sending off for Liverpool’s U23s against Tottenham.

The Reds’ midfielder was dismissed after putting his hands around the neck of George Marsh following an aerial challenge between the two.

Lallana was making a rare appearance for Neil Critchley’s U23s in an attempt to accelerate his recovery from a minor injury that has seen him miss the last three senior games.

Spurs boss Pochettino told Football.London: “I hear, but i didn’t see the reaction. It’s football sometimes this happen, I can not say nothing because Adam is a very special person for me, but sure he is going to send a message to us about what happened and then maybe have a better idea about the situation.”

Pochettino knows Lallana well from the time they spent together at Southampton between 2013 and 2014.

Any ban for the Liverpool star is unlikely to apply to first team matches, although Lallana has since come under criticism for his uncharacteristic lack of professionalism.

The midfielder has endured a tough season on Merseyside, missing the opening three months through injury and experiencing a slow return to form following his recovery.

A recent aggravation of his previous thigh injury is sure to have fuelled his frustration, especially during a period where Jurgen Klopp has tipped him to rise as a key attacking influence in response to Philippe Coutinho’s departure.
