Shocking messages directed at Loris Karius following the Champions League final have led to police intervening.
The German goalkeeper was at fault for two of Real Madrid’s goals in the 3-1 defeat and has since been subject to vile death threats from supposed Liverpool supporters on social media.
Karius’ first mistake arrived when he inexplicably threw the ball at Karim Benzema before seeing the consequent rebound roll into his open net.
The second followed Gareth Bale’s stunning over-head kick when he allowed a long-range effort from the Welshman to slip beyond his grasp.
Liverpool’s first choice shot-stopper fell to his knees in tears at full-time before bravely holding his hands up in apology to his travelling fans.
Frustration and upset among Reds is entirely understandable given the enormity of the occasion, but there is absolutely no place for the disgusting remarks that have warranted police involvement.
Merseyside police force are now investigating the online abuse, according to the Telegraph.

A dejected Karius himself took the entirety of the blame for his team’s defeat during a post-match interview, with his teammates contrastingly refusing to point the finger at the former Mainz man.
It need be noted that an overwhelming majority of Liverpool supporters have followed suit in expressing their support for Karius in undoubtedly the toughest moment of his career.
Those behind the disgraceful hate messages have no right to claim to be true fans, nor to be justified in their actions.
Karius’ night to forget followed his best run of form since signing for the club, in which he played a key role in improving Liverpool’s defensive record.
Regardless of what comes next in his Anfield career, he needs and deserves all the support he gets. Win as a team, lose as a team, after all.
