Adrian has revealed that Pepe Reina helped convince him to join Liverpool over the summer with a ringing endorsement of the club.
The club swooped for the former West Ham ‘keeper, a free agent, when Simon Mignolet joined Club Brugge.
It was clearly a great opportunity for the 32-year-old, but perhaps he needed some persuasion given (what he thought would be) limited prospects of gametime.
Compatriot Reina, an Anfield hero, stepped in to allay any doubts.
“Pepe Reina, in whom I have a lot of confidence, assured me that I would enjoy very much,” Adrian told Spanish publication AS.
“Obviously, it is a city different from London, smaller, more welcoming. He told me that I was coming to a great club, that I was going to have a great time”
Neither could of course anticipate just how suddenly Adrian would be called into action.
He’s already secured a mention in the club’s history books with his decisive Super Cup penalty shoot-out save, and he’s quickly learnt why Reina described the club in such special terms.
