The Portuguese was a fine player for Liverpool and was probably one of the few good decisions Roy Hodgson made during his time at the club. The midfielder scored five goals in 41 appearances, including one against Everton in Kenny Dalglish’s first game back as manager. He handed in a transfer request that summer, joining Chelsea.

One of a host of signings made by Dalglish in his only summer transfer window during his second spell as Liverpool manager. After an impressive season for recently-relegated Blackpool, the Scot struggled to deal with the step up in class and was subsequently moved on by the incoming Brendan Rodgers, joining Stoke City.
