Liverpool transfer news: Reds linked with strange £40m double swoop on Arsenal

Liverpool have been linked with a £40m double swoop on Premier League rivals Arsenal for winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

Now, we must stress that this transfer rumour comes from sources at Football Insider, so is admittedly lacking credibility, but it certainly caught our eye.

The report claims that both players are on Liverpool’s radar after falling out of favour at Arsenal, who may cash in on both as their contracts wind down.

Chamberlain is an attractive proposition. Although the 22-year-old has not kicked on as the Gunners might have anticipated, he has many admirable qualities.

He is quick and powerful, and a dynamic and skilful dribbler. His end product needs work – he only has 14 goals and 21 assists in 149 appearances for Arsenal.

That is probably why Arsenal are reportedly considering selling him, but he suits Jurgen Klopp’s style and could be worth a gamble at the right price this summer.

Onto Szczesny. No thanks. Although we need a new goalkeeper to at least challenge Simon Mignolet for the number-one spot, the Poland international is not the answer.

The 25-year-old, on loan at Roma, is right out of the Mignolet mould – a stopper capable of great performances but far too inconsistent and prone to errors.

Arsenal’s third-choice stopper should not be on our transfer shortlist for the next window. Oxlade-Chamberlain could be on it, but maybe not right at the top.
