Liverpool refuse to increase bid for highly desirable left-back

We will not pay more than £7 million for Ben Chilwell – putting the future of the deal in doubt.

According to the Echo, we had a £7 million bid rejected yesterday, but will not make a new offer. The bid was believed to be £5 million up front with a further £2 million in add-ons.

James Pearce says we are not prepared to pay £10 million for a player who is nothing more than a hot prospect and who is yet to make his Premier League debut.

Andy Robertson of Hull City is our second option if Chilwell falls through.

Does it seem a bit petty? We understand the need to be financially responsible, but what if we want the player that badly – as would seem to be the case given the protracted chase – surely £3 million is neither here nor there in the modern game.
