Georginio Wijnaldum has been pretty outstanding for Liverpool lately.
His goals steal the headlines but his overall contribution seems to go somewhat unfairly overlooked. He is gradually moulding into an accomplished central midfielder in terms of the impact he is beginning to have in every aspect of the game.
One man who has picked up on the Dutchman’s importance is former Liverpool star Didi Hamann, who has praised the £25million signing for his role in Jurgen Klopp’s midfielder three.
He told Liverpoolfc.com: “I like him a lot. He showed at Newcastle that he’s a goalscoring midfielder and I think he brings a lot more to the team.”
“He’s got a lot of energy, he can win a ball, I think he’s got very good vision, he’s a good passer of the ball.”
“So I think his all-round game is very good, and obviously the goals [are] the icing on the cake.”
“For the short time he’s been here, I think he’s been a brilliant buy and I think he’ll only get better.”
Wijnaldum instantly lived up to his recent vow to be more than a big game player by scoring a vital goal in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Burnley.
He has proven himself as not only a composed and clinical finisher but also as a technician and someone capable of finding the eye of the needle passes.
Amidst a period in which Klopp’s transfer policy has come in question, Wijnaldum marks excellent business and a signing who is still to reach his peak.
Keep it up, Gini.
