Coutinho outlines the squad’s mentality ahead of Southampton clash

Liverpool seem to be experiencing a slight case of déjà vu in terms of every game over recent weeks being dubbed as a must win or the potentially biggest of the season.

Sunday’s game at home to Southampton promises to join that trend and has the makings to be a seriously tough test for Jurgen Klopp’s men as they come up against a side that they have drawn to and been beaten by twice in all competitions so far this season.

Philippe Coutinho has outlined the determination amongst the squad as well as how his teammates must approach this weekend’s fixture at Anfield.

“The team has worked very hard and worked very well this week. Everyone is focused on the next match,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“It will be a very, very difficult game, but we have the support of our fans because we will play at home. We have to attack them from the start and show them how much we want to win the game. For this reason, we have to be on top of them from the very first minute to get the three points.”

“Our target is something we wanted from the beginning of the season, we always believed we could be in the top four to play in the Champions League next season.”

“It is a great opportunity for us, but the last three games will be like three finals for our team where we need to win all of them to confirm our position in the league. The whole squad is confident.”

The game promises to be a useful insight into how much the players have learned from their recent outings against Southampton as well as the defeat at home to Crystal Palace two weeks ago.

Three points against Claude Puel’s side would be a significant stride towards consolidating that top four place and giving the entire team the confidence that they can go on and win the two games that follow.

If Coutinho’s words are anything to go by, the players are heading into the game with the perfect mentality.
