German president’s comments put LFC on transfer alert

It looks like Max Meyer is leaving Schalke on a free transfer this summer.

Speaking to Bild, Schalke president Clemens Tonnies said: I had an appointment with Max and his advisor, which was cancelled by his agent on short notice.

“If someone doesn’t want to talk to me, I cannot change that.”

The Germany international’s contract runs out at the end of the season, and with Leon Goretzka already leaving on a Bosman to join Bayern Munich, poor Schalke look set to lose another one of their homegrown talents.

The Mirror claim Liverpool have been ‘buoyed’ by the news, but also reports that we still consider Napoli’s £50m Jorginho as our primary option.

Meyer is a decent, free alternative, though, especially with Emre Can seemingly set for an exit.

He used to play on the wing or as a no.10 but this term has been transformed into a deep-lying playmaker, or a ‘no.6’ as Jurgen Klopp refers to the position.

As a result, Meyer has yet to score or register an assist this season, but very rarely gives the ball away and ticks Schalke over while sitting in front of the defence.

In truth, we think there’s better options available. Jorginho is a better player in the position and although he’ll be much more expensive, will push us closer to where we want to be – as Meyer hasn’t really fulfilled his early potential.
