“Why would I want to leave?” – Shaqiri quashes rumours of him wanting to leave Liverpool

Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri has been linked with a move away from Anfield, but he’s come out after his stellar performance in the Merseyside Derby to quash the rumours.

The Swiss international claims he’s happy with the Reds and doesn’t want to leave, by quite literally saying he’s got a contract that runs until 2023.

This is great news for Liverpool fans, as the former Bayern Munich man is a superb option off the bench and fantastic cover for Mohamed Salah or indeed one of the central midfielders.

I am very happy here”, he told The Athletic following the Merseyside Derby win earlier this week.

I think everyone can see that with how I played. I have a long contract [until June 2023] and I am focused only on Liverpool.

It’s been a difficult time for me but I’m excited about the future. Why would I want to leave Liverpool? This is a special team and there’s a lot to achieve here.

Shaq potentially leaving a weird one – the main thing is obviously the player’s well-being so I hope he makes the right decision for him, but he’s a useful squad player for Klopp.

The Merseyside Derby is case and point, with the winger playing a big part in the game by finding the back of the net – even more impressive when you consider how little he’s played.

It’s likely Shaq will get some more game time over the next month, with the Reds’ busy schedule, but long-term he may want to consider his options.
