Over the course of the last few years, Liverpool have made some significant progress when it comes to bolstering the depth and quality of their squad. From breaking transfer records to scouting hidden gems, the club have made a concerted effort to try and compete with the likes of Manchester City, who have been spending big for over a decade now.

Today, we’re going to take a look at the five most expensive signings to ever walk through the doors of Anfield – many of whom are currently in the first-team squad. They’re also likely to feature in Liverpool’s next Premier League game against Everton, and if you check the latest bet365 odds, Arne Slot’s men are favoured at 4/11 to secure all three points and continue their march towards a 20th league title.

Darwin Núñez

With a price tag of £85 million (including add-ons), Darwin clears the rest of the field as the most expensive signing in the history of this illustrious club. Alas, while he managed 15 goals in his first season and 18 in his second, his struggles during this campaign have led to widespread speculation over his future.

Virgil van Dijk

He’s the defensive rock that Liverpool had been seeking – and for the last seven years, Virgil van Dijk has defined what it means to be a leader in this team. From tasting Champions League glory to lifting the Premier League title, he will undoubtedly go down as one of the best centre-backs that Merseyside has ever seen.

Alisson Becker

While there have been a few hiccups here and there, the prevailing thought is that Alisson Becker has been absolutely integral to the continued success of the Reds under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot. Without him, you could easily argue that there would be fewer trophies in the cabinet at Anfield.

Dominik Szoboszlai

After finally being given a chance to shine, Dominik Szoboszlai has served as a commanding presence in the middle of the park for Liverpool. Between his work rate and his creativity, the Hungarian has all the potential in the world, and he could easily prove to be a permanent fixture in the seasons ahead.

Naby Keïta

While the glimpses that fans saw of Naby Keïta were exciting, a slew of injuries meant that he never quite lived up to his full potential during his five-year stay with the Reds. He was still successful when you look at the winners’ medals he accumulated, but there remains a feeling that he could’ve offered so much more.

Liverpool’s future transfer desires

Just one Liverpool signing appears on the list of the top 10 most expensive Premier League transfers of all time – and judging by the current top-flight table, those on the Kop will be absolutely fine with that statistic.

The club’s owners have always insisted on spending smart rather than big, but with the increasing financial push from the likes of Man City, Newcastle, Chelsea and even Nottingham Forest, one might wonder whether or not that mentality will begin to shift.
