According to the Daily Mirror, United’s initial inquest into Sterling’s availability was firmly rejected by the Reds, but Louis van Gaal is intent on causing trouble and is ready to submit an official bid to test our resolve.

Sterling’s potential summer transfer has been widely discussed for several months now, with the player’s agent – Aidy Ward – ruling out any possibility of the youngster extending his current deal at Anfield, which expires in 2017 (via the Evening Standard).

Van Gaal believes the player’s contract situation means he will definitely move this summer – say the Mirror – and while he expects Liverpool to reject his offer, he knows it will cause more tension between ourselves, Sterling and Ward.

United have a nasty habit of causing us problems in the transfer market – having already poached Memphis Depay from under our noses (via Sky Sports)  – and their apparent interest in Sterling is only likely to frustrate more of our fan base.

The England international has also been linked with a move to Real Madrid, where he would rejoin the man who first brought him to Liverpool, Rafael Benitez. However, the Spaniard has refused to be drawn on any such rumours and currently seems unlikely to table a bid of his own (via BBC Sport).
