We kick-off our preseason against local side Tranmere Rovers on Friday.

There’s always been a healthy and respectful rivalry between the two Merseyside-based clubs; many older fans regale stories of going to watch Tranmere at Prenton Park when the Reds were playing away from home.

Back in 2000 they played in the last ever League Cup final at Wembley when they lost to Leicester, but since then the club have fallen on harder times and they now play in the Conference.

The last competitive game between the two sides was in the FA Cup quarter-final in 2001. Tranmere had already beaten Everton in the third round, and were in the mood for another giant-killing, especially given Liverpool legend John Aldridge was their boss.

We won 4-2 with goals from Danny Murphy, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, and Robbie Fowler – though Tranmere twice pulled back to within a goal, making the scoreline seem more comfortable than it actually was.

We famously went on to beat Arsenal in the final on the way to a historic treble.
