Liverpool’s transfer plans rocked with key target set to sign new contract

Liverpool will have to look elsewhere for left-back enforcements this summer, with primary target Ben Chilwell set to extend his Leicester City contract, reports ESPN.

The 19-year-old didn’t play for the Foxes last season in the Premier League, but is very highly rated and was the subject of a number of bids from Liverpool earlier in the summer.

Liverpool cooled our interest though, according to Goal, with the two clubs too far apart in our valuations of the teenager, and it now appears any hope of a deal being done before September is over.

At the end of last season, most Liverpool fans wanted a direct replacement for left-back Alberto Moreno, but Jurgen Klopp preferred to target a younger backup option instead.

With that in mind, it’ll be interesting to see who we target now, with much time wasted on the Chilwell pursuit. Sky Sports believe Jordan Amavi from Aston Villa is a possibility. He’s a 22-year-old who missed almost the entirety of Villa’s embarrassing campaign in 2015/16 through injury, but was highly rated in France before his arrival.

Klopp has Brad Smith as a current option, but is unlikely to be able to call upon Jon Flanagan – who was left out of tour to the USA amid speculation (in the Echo) he could accept a loan to Burnley.
