Protesters expected outside Melwood as Reds make announcement

A number of local residents are expected to protest against the sale of Melwood training ground tonight, according to the Liverpool ECHO.

Earlier in the day, it was announced that the Reds had formally sold the iconic training facility in West Derby to a housing developer ahead of a move to the Academy site in Kirkby which should be completed in time for next summer.

The old site would then be demolished and used for affordable housing.

Many local residents, however, want the site to be used for community purposes. A campaign against selling Melwood for development has been in place for around two years since the idea was originally put forward by the club.

The Reds will make £10 million from the sale of the land, all of which will be put towards funding the new facility, which is expected to cost around £50 million.

The new training facility plans look incredible and the move is well overdue in a footballing sense, bringing the first team and the Academy much closer together, but that will not make the process any easier for those in the local area.
